Configuring Projects

This guide covers how to configure your BetterPost project settings. For a step-by-step tutorial on creating your first project, see Your First Project.

Project Setup Page

The project setup page allows you to configure the basic settings for your BetterPost project. All changes are saved automatically as you type.

Basic Settings

Project Name

  • The display name for your project
  • This appears throughout the interface and in generated content
  • Changes are saved automatically as you type

Default Target Audience

  • Describe who your content is intended for
  • This setting applies to all channels by default
  • Can be overridden at the channel level
  • Use a multi-line description to be specific about your audience

Default Tone

  • Define the writing style and voice for your content
  • Examples: "professional", "casual", "informative", "conversational"
  • This setting applies to all channels by default
  • Can be overridden at the channel level

Advanced Settings

Additional Instructions

  • Customize content generation with specific guidelines
  • Applied to all channels by default (can be overridden per channel)
  • Examples: "Add lots of emoji", "Use bullet points frequently", "Keep sentences short"
  • Advanced feature for fine-tuning AI output beyond audience and tone
  • Word limits: Configurable content length (50-10,000 words, default varies by channel type)

Content Criteria

Criteria

  • Define what type of content should be included in your project
  • Enter one criterion per line in the large text area
  • Each line becomes a separate criterion used for content matching
  • The AI uses these criteria to evaluate and score potential content

Example criteria:

artificial intelligence
machine learning developments
startup funding news
product launch announcements
technology industry trends

Import from URL

The "Import from URL..." feature allows you to automatically configure your project based on an existing publication:

  1. Click the "Import from URL..." button
  2. Enter the URL of a publication's website or example article
  3. The AI analyzes the content and automatically sets:
    • Project name
    • Default audience
    • Default tone
    • Content criteria

Warning: This will completely overwrite your current project settings. The action cannot be undone.

Delete Project

At the bottom of the page, you can permanently delete the project:

  • Click "Delete Project..."
  • Confirm in the dialog that appears
  • This permanently deletes the project and all associated channels, sources, and stories
  • This action cannot be undone

How Auto-Save Works

All text fields on the project setup page use auto-save:

  • Changes are saved automatically after you stop typing
  • You'll see a spinning loader icon next to "Project Setup" while saving
  • No need to click a "Save" button
  • If there's an error saving, you'll see a notification

Best Practices

Writing Effective Criteria

  • Be specific rather than general
  • Use concrete topics rather than vague concepts
  • Include industry-specific terms when relevant
  • Start with 5-10 criteria and refine based on results

Setting Your Audience

  • Be specific about who you're targeting
  • Include relevant details like industry, role, or interests
  • Consider the level of technical knowledge
  • Think about what information they need

Choosing Your Tone

  • Match your audience's expectations
  • Consider your brand voice
  • Be consistent across all content
  • Test different tones to see what works

Using Additional Instructions

  • Keep instructions clear and specific
  • Focus on style and format preferences
  • Avoid conflicting instructions
  • Test with content generation to see the impact

Good Additional Instructions Examples:

Add lots of emoji to make content more engaging
Use bullet points and numbered lists for clarity
Include technical jargon appropriate for developers
Keep sentences short and punchy
Focus on actionable insights and takeaways

Avoid:

Be funny but professional (conflicting)
Write like a famous author (too vague)
Use complex language (unclear)

Next Steps

After configuring your project:

  • Add content sources to feed your project
  • Set up channels for content distribution
  • Explore source types to understand different content options
