Criteria Sidebar - Refining Relevancy
The sidebar on the Stories page is a powerful tool for refining what content appears most relevant to your project. This is where you can adjust your content criteria in real-time to improve the AI's understanding of what you're looking for.
How Criteria Refinement Works
- Add Specific Topics - Enter keywords, phrases, or concepts that describe content you want to see
- Real-Time Updates - As you add criteria, the relevancy scores for existing stories update automatically
- Iterative Improvement - Review the results and continue refining to get better matches
Best Practices for Criteria
Focus on Positive Matching Rather than trying to exclude unwanted content, focus on describing what you do want. AI systems work better with positive examples than negative ones.
Good Examples:
machine learning frameworks
startup funding rounds
sustainable agriculture practices
digital marketing case studies
Instead of Negative Filters:
❌ not cryptocurrency
❌ exclude politics
❌ no basic tutorials
Be Specific and Descriptive The more specific your criteria, the better the AI can understand your preferences:
Specific (Better):
React component libraries
SaaS pricing strategy analysis
B2B email marketing automation
Vague (Less Effective):
programming
business
marketing
Why Positive Criteria Work Better
BetterPost uses AI to understand the semantic meaning of your criteria and match it against incoming content. Positive criteria work better because:
- Clear Intent - They tell the AI exactly what to look for
- Semantic Understanding - AI can find related concepts and synonyms
- Confidence Scoring - Positive matches generate more reliable relevancy scores
- Fewer False Positives - Specific positive criteria reduce irrelevant matches

Troubleshooting Common Issues
Too Much Irrelevant Content
Solution: Add more specific positive criteria rather than trying to exclude unwanted topics. Focus on describing exactly what you want to see.
Missing Important Stories
Solution: Review your sources and criteria. Make sure you're monitoring the right sources and that your criteria include related keywords for important topics.
Inconsistent Relevancy Scores
Solution: Be patient as the AI learns your preferences. Consistently mark stories as relevant or not relevant to help improve future scoring.
Overwhelming Volume
Solution: Focus on high-relevancy stories first, consider reducing the number of sources, or adjust criteria to be more selective.
Poor Story Analysis
Solution: If key points or quotes seem inaccurate:
- Check if the source content is accessible
- The AI may need more context from the full article
- Some content types (like social media) may have limited analysis depth
